WCG pulling the plug in traditional game competition

Cadred has laid its hands on a leaked letter to partners of the World Cyber Games that has confirmed the organisation will no longer be running traditional games tournaments and only supporting mobile phone games.

The news will come as a major shock to e-sports fans the world over and will also be a massive blow to games such as Counter-Strike 1.6 who have been supported continually by the event, which in its heyday was seen as the biggest e-sports event on the globe.

The motivation for it seems to be financial and it was clear that the games that were generating the most money in recent years were mobile phone titles, given their increasing presence on the ticket.

Evil Lulu, Fae Sorceress Fanart

Below is fanart of an evil Lulu using her magic balling up the squirrels. Such an evil act by a small sorceress. However no matter how evil Lulu looks in this picture, she still looks way too adorable to harm anyone. Credits go to Nagmar on Reddit.

Amazing Sona Fanart by Hannah515: League of Legends

Below is an outstanding fanart made by Hannah515. The entire picture is well made. I have definitely made this my desktop background. Although she kind of look like she is choking because of the brace on her neck, the details made on the entire body makes up for it.

High Resolution League of Legend desktop background

A creation by Dberdd on Reddit. The background looks great under high resolution screen but the giant Tryndamere is kind of in the way and does not fit in with the rest of the picture. However, I approve of this creation and have already made it by desktop background.

IntelEM World Championship Group A Team Roster

With the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship starting March 6th, we wanted to give competitive League of Legends fans a brief overview of the teams playing in the event. We’ve tracked down each team’s roster and the roles each player performs so you can know who to watch when the competition starts.

[URL2="http://clgaming.net/"]Counter Logic Gaming[/URL2]

Roster and Roles:
  • HotshotGG: Bruisers/Ability Power Carry
  • Chauster: Support
  • BigFatLP: Ability Power Carry
  • Doublelift: Attack Damage Carry
  • Saintvicious: Jungler/Tank

Currently the number one seed on the Intel Extreme Masters rankings, as well as tied for first in the North American Challenger Circuit, Counter Logic Gaming is a clear favorite to making it out of Group A and potentially to the finals of the tournament. The team showed impressive skill during the Curse Invitational, and have more experience playing against the Chinese teams than any other team at the event.

[URL2="http://fnatic.com/"]FnaticRaidCall[/URL2]

Roster and Roles:

  • Shushei: Ability Power Carry or Assassins
  • Mellisan: Support
  • xPeke: Ability Power Carry or Bruisers
  • Lamia: Attack Damage Carry
  • Cyanide: Jungler/Tank

The Season One Champions are back, but whether they’ll have a good performance at the tournament is up for debate. Recently the team has had poorer than expected results at online tournaments. However, the team is legendary for being able to perform in a live event environment: at their last live event, IntelEM New York, they didn’t lose a single game.

World Elite

Roster and Roles:

  • Misaya CN: Ability Power Carry
  • Furrystyle: Attack Damage Carry
  • Only play top: Bruisers/Assassins
  • Woyichoasen: Support
  • CallMeMTa: Jungler/Tank

The winners of IntelEM Guangzhou are returning for their next chance of success on an international stage. The team frequently plays on the North American ranked teams ladder, currently sitting in the top 30. World Elite is known for their aggressive play and somewhat unusual champion picks, like support Jarvan IV.

[URL2="http://www.team-dignitas.org/"]Team Dignitas[/URL2]

Roster and Roles:

  • Voyboy: Bruisers/Assassins
  • Scarra: Ability Power Carry
  • L0CUST: Support
  • Imaqtpie: Attack Damage Carry
  • I Will Dominate: Jungler/Tank

Dignitas enters the tournament with momentum since their third place finish at IntelEM Kiev. The team most recently won the Curse Invitational qualifier in some very challenging matches against Counter Logic Gaming. Currently 3rd on the North American Challenger Circuit, a win at Hannover would put them in a convincing 1st place position.

[URL2="http://www.millenium.org/"]Millenium[/URL2]

Roster and Roles:

  • Kujaa: Support
  • HawkDon: Ability Power Carry
  • Enigmz: Jungler/Tank
  • Haydal: Bruisers
  • Hmmer: Attack Damage Carry

Though Team Millenium did well during the first half of the Intel Extreme Masters Global Challenge series, the roster the team brings to Hannover is very different from the team which started off the season. Only Kujaa remains from the original line up. However, though the roster is new, they’ve risen through the ranks on the ranked 5v5 team ladder in EU West very quickly, currently sitting in the top 20.

Invictus Gaming:

Roster and Roles:

  • Wh1t3zZ: Ability Power Carry
  • ChrIs: Support
  • XiaoXiao: Bruisers
  • illusion: Jungler/Tank
  • MikakoTabe: Attack Damage Carry

Invictus Gaming last played on an international stage during the World Cyber Games Grand Final, where they lost to Counter Logic Gaming Canada in the Round of Eight. Unlike the other Chinese teams at the World Championship, iG has been relatively inactive on the North American servers. Invictus will be an unknown challenge for the North American and European teams at Hannover.

The top three teams from each group will advance in the tournament, with the first place team in the group going straight to the Semi-Finals. Next week, we’ll be going over the teams from Group B. Be sure to check out the competitive site March 6th for the latest coverage from the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship.

IntelEM World Champion Group B Team Roster

Last week, we published our article on the teams of group A of the groupstage at the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship. This week we bring you group B, which features one of the most intense groups we’ve seen in a League of Legends Tournament.

Interested in watching the action in person? Check out the ESL’s event landing page for information for travel options and free tickets.

Team SoloMid

Roster:
  • ReginaId – Ability Power Carry
  • TheOddOne – Jungler
  • Chaox – Attack Damage Carry
  • Xpecial – Support
  • The Rain Man – Bruisers
While their performance at IntelEM Kiev was impressive, Team SoloMid has had some issues performing up to their own expectations in online events. Losing the semi-finals during the LoLpro.com invitational to Counter Logic Gaming and then losing in the IPL Killing Spree to Monomatic eSports, it’s unknown how the team will perform at Hannover. However, as they are the most seasoned team in their group, and have performed extremely well at their last two live appearances. Betting against them in the group stage seems unwise.

SK Gaming

Roster:

  • Ocelote – Ability Power Carry
  • Dedrayon – Jungler
  • Kevin – Bruisers
  • Nyph – Support
  • Candy Panda – Attack Damage Carry

SK Gaming comes to Hannover with a new jungler, the Polish player Dedrayon. In the many online tournaments since IntelEM Kiev, SK hasn’t yet had a stand out performance, but they’ve been placing consistently higher than before. We’ll see how SK’s newest player handles the intense pressure that comes with a live Challenger Circuit event.

Moscow Five

Roster:

  • Alex Ich – Ability Power Carry
  • Diamondprox – Jungler
  • Darien – Bruisers
  • Gosu Pepper – Support
  • Genja – Attack Damage Carry

A month ago, Moscow Five seemed absolutely unbeatable, but things change quickly in the League of Legends competitive scene. While still a threat in every tournament they enter, getting knocked out of the IPL 4 qualifier by relatively unknown and inexperienced team Monomatic eSports showed there’s a chink in the dragons armor. Even so, Moscow Five looks to be the strongest contender in the group and definitely a favorite to win the tournament.

Sypher:

Roster:

  • Skyyart – Bruisers/Ability Power Carry
  • Moopz – Ability Power Carry
  • Pyri – Support
  • Lounet – Attack Damage Carry
  • ShLaYa – Jungler

Sypher has not backed down since their 0-3 loss during the groupstage at IntelEM Kiev: the French team has been performing well during recent prized events online. Many of the North American teams in this group have been defeated by Sypher in the past. There’s no telling how high Sypher will place if they make it out of this very challenging group.

Curse:

Roster:

  • Nyjacky – Ability Power Carry
  • Crumbz – Jungler/Bruisers
  • SYDTKO – Bruisers/Ability Power Carry/Jungler
  • Elementz – Support
  • Cop – Attack Damage Carry

Curse is a difficult team to evaluate: while they consistently perform well at online events, they are unable to bring one of their star players, Pobelter, to live events. Pobelter’s replacement, SYDTKO, is an extremely versatile player but has often been thrown into roles at the last minute. With Curse’s line up known well in advance of Hanover, we’ll see how that additional prep time will affect their tournament performance.

EHOME

Roster:

  • Max – Ability Power Carry/Bruisers
  • Taburisswu – Jungler
  • Pdd – Bruisers/Ability Power Carry
  • Lucky – Support
  • TS – Attack Damage Carry

The IntelEM World Championship will be the second time EHOME has competed live on an international stage, the first being IntelEM Guangzhou. Like the other Chinese team World Elite, EHOME actively plays on the North American ladder, and currently ranks in the top 15. While EHOME faces a tough bracket, they’ve defeated SK before and have the advantage of a relatively unknown play style against their opponents.

There’s no doubt that the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship will feature the most intense competition we’ve seen yet. Check back later this week when we announce our event site featuring the live stream, VODs, match recaps, and more.

KSL Grand League

KSL Grand League: MVP vs Prime

The KSL is back and better than ever! After our initial amazing success with the 2012 Opening Ceremonies, we’ve decided to completely revamp the KSL format! Starting Saturday, February 11th, we’ll be entering a Round-Robin League Format, featuring the 8 teams in the KSL: Prime, Incredible Miracle, FXOpen, Most Valuable Player, ZeNEX, NewStar HoSeo, Fnatic, and StarTale.
The League will run on Saturdays and Sundays, at the regular KSL time. (23:00 KST) [Dates subject to change depending on GSL schedule. Over the next few weekends, these top Korean teams will battle it out for an increased prize pool, showing possibilities and matchups that this GSTL season might not be able to provide!

For every win a team earns, they will win a prize of $200. After the round robin matches complete, the Top 4 teams will be eligible for the playoffs. The 4th place team will face off against the 3rd place team. The winner of the 3rd/4th place match will move on to face the 2nd place team, and like before, the winner of that will advance to the finals to play the 1st place ranked team. The winning team in the finals will earn themselves $5000, with the second place team taking home $2000. As such, not only does every match count for prize money, but also for league standing, where first overall in the league guarantees your team $2000. Like before, all matches will be Best of 11, giving teams a chance to show off not only their top players, but also their hidden talent that isn’t seen in the GSL.
